My Broken BoatOutboard Help

Why isn't my power trim/tilt working?

Power trim/tilt not working · Symptom: Motor won't tilt up/down; pump hums or silent.

Quick answer: Most often: blown PTT fuse, weak battery / loose or corroded connections, manual release valve not fully closed or leaking (appears in most rows of Suzuki's table). Start here: Check battery voltage and connections. If that doesn't fix it, work through the checks below, and see a marine mechanic if you're unsure.

Likely causes (most to least common)

  1. Blown PTT fuse
  2. Weak battery / loose or corroded connections
  3. Manual release valve not fully closed or leaking (appears in most rows of Suzuki's table)
  4. Low PTT fluid
  5. Faulty switch or relay
  6. Pump motor, pump or tilt cylinder failure

Safe owner checks & fixes

  1. Check battery voltage and connections.
  2. Check the PTT fuse (location/rating per manual).
  3. Confirm the manual release valve is fully closed — snug, do not over-tighten.
  4. Try both helm and cowl switches; listen for the pump motor.
  5. Motor hums/runs but no movement or motor creeps down: check fluid level per manual and bleed procedure.
  6. To move it by hand: open the manual release screw the number of turns your manual states (Suzuki DF200–250 owner's manual: two turns counterclockwise), move the motor, retighten. The motor is very heavy — secure grip and footing.
  7. Keep people clear: the PTT switch can operate with the key off.

Parts / tools

Screwdriver for release valve, fuse (rating per manual), PTT fluid (type per manual).

Call a marine mechanic when

Fluid leaking from the PTT unit; pump runs but won't lift after fluid/bleed; motor creeps down overnight with valve closed (tilt piston leak); relay/motor electrical testing. If you're on the water and unsafe, call TowBoatUS/Sea Tow or the Coast Guard (VHF 16).
