Why does my prop slip, ventilate, or cavitate?
Prop ventilation / cavitation (RPM spikes, slips) · Symptom: RPM jumps without more speed, especially in turns or rough water.
Quick answer: Most often: trimmed out too far (ventilation), engine mounted too high on transom, damaged prop or gearcase, missing diffuser ring. Start here: Trim down and re-test. If that doesn't fix it, work through the checks below, and see a marine mechanic if you're unsure.
Likely causes (most to least common)
- Trimmed out too far (ventilation)
- Engine mounted too high on transom
- Damaged prop or gearcase, missing diffuser ring
- Weeds/debris on prop (cavitation)
- Bent blade or burrs
- Spun prop hub
Safe owner checks & fixes
- Trim down and re-test.
- Remove debris; inspect blades for bends/nicks.
- Have damaged prop repaired by a prop shop.
- Mercury PVS props: plug sizes tune venting.
- Engine height changes: mechanic/dealer.
Parts / tools
Prop wrench, spare prop.
Call a marine mechanic when
Damaged gearcase or skeg; bent prop (prop shop); engine height on transom needs changing; spun hub. If you're on the water and unsafe, call TowBoatUS/Sea Tow or the Coast Guard (VHF 16).
