Why is my outboard overheating or sounding the alarm?
Overheat alarm / warning · Symptom: Buzzer, overheat light, engine limits RPM.
Quick answer: Most often: blocked water intake, failed impeller, stuck thermostat. Start here: Throttle down, neutral, shut off. Don't "baby it home." If that doesn't fix it, work through the checks below, and see a marine mechanic if you're unsure.
Likely causes (most to least common)
- Blocked water intake
- Failed impeller
- Stuck thermostat
- Clogged cooling passages
- Exhaust gases entering cooling (head gasket)
- Gauge/voltage fault
Safe owner checks & fixes
- Throttle down, neutral, shut off. Don't "baby it home."
- Clear intakes and telltale (see 06).
- Restart only if strong steady stream and alarm clears.
- If alarm returns, get a tow.
- Steam or spurting from telltale may signal head gasket — mechanic.
Parts / tools
Wire, flush muffs/attachment.
Call a marine mechanic when
Alarm returns after clearing intakes; engine ran hot for more than a few seconds; steam/spurting telltale or white smoke (possible head gasket). Get a tow rather than run it. If you're on the water and unsafe, call TowBoatUS/Sea Tow or the Coast Guard (VHF 16).
